Back in 2011, among my very first commissions, was a piece about the restoration of Hughenden Manor’s walled kitchen garden. It had been transformed from a derelict plot of overgrown land, to a pretty kitchen garden, maintained by volunteers, and used as an educational resource for local school children and the local blind club. I went to visit the walled garden and chatted with one of the volunteers working on the plots. He was friendly and happy to show me around and tell me all about it. I asked his permission to quote him and took his photo, but I didn’t have a commission to write it up yet.
So I contacted the National Trust press office and they put me in touch with a medium who said she’d experienced Disraeli’s presence in the drawing room. I wrote up her story for a spiritual publication. Then I did a lengthier piece on the Hughenden Ghost for a paranormal magazine.
