Poverty may be experienced at the individual level but it must be conceptualized as global poverty and tackled at the global level. In recent years such debates have moved to the core of my academic and professional work on international development. I became particularly interested in the contrasting responses that I encountered to the idea and practices of global poverty eradication in my teaching and research. Many of my students enthusiastically embraced the idea of tackling global poverty as a great advance over the pre-existing notion of international development.
