Hey, Jimmy. ” Jimmy tries to calm himself. He puts the pint down between the two crates and pushes it forward with his foot. He notices Nino and Joey sitting on the curb and puts down two more pints. “For Nino and Joey,” he says. ” Jimmy doesn’t know what else to say, so he turns and walks to the front for another crate. As he reaches down, the doors crash shut— the lock rattles—everything goes black. He freezes—too scared to move—crouches into a ball, feels the floor. He looks around frantically but can see nothing, not even his hand.

He eases out from behind the cans and crawls to the edge of the schoolyard. ” The voice is louder. He peeks around the corner of the school: three guards. ” He doesn’t have time to wait for the right moment when the guards’ heads are turned. He gets up and dashes toward the side of the steps. When his team sees him, they stealthily lock hands and stretch to form a line from the stairs to where Jimmy is storming. All Jimmy has to do is tag Frankie at the end of the line and they’ll all be free. He is twenty feet away, fifteen— The guard closest to Jimmy suddenly turns, cuts between Jimmy and Frankie, and yells for help.
