The caterpillars feed on passionflower leaves. Distribution: From coast to coast within the United States. Remarks: Wingspan mm. This is perhaps the most exotic-looking butterfly in the forest. Like the giant swallowtail, it has the look of the tropics about it, as does the closely related black and yellow zebra longwing (Heliconius charitonius), which we saw fluttering through the forest on a single occasion and managed to miss with a failed swing of the net. Like the Gulf fritillary, the zebra feeds upon passionflower in the caterpillar stage.

Worker yellowjackets can be a nuisance at picnics because they scavenge lunch meats for protein to feed the grubs. Natural prey includes caterpillars plucked from green vegetation. Young queens yet to establish a nest of their own overwinter beneath the bark of logs, snags, and even living trees. They are unmistakable for their large size and especially for the orange color so different from that of the yellow and black workers. When spring arrives the queens emerge and buzz about in search of a nesting site.
