In the last decade or so, deaf people have taken their places in every area of societyas professional sports figures, actors, lawyers, doctors, teachers, stockbrokers, and writers. Also, thanks to a wealth of movies, television programs, books, and articles on the subject of deafness, more hearing people now recognize that deafness is not about hearing but about communication.
The term is applied to people who are profoundly deaf, with little or no hearing, to people who are only slightly hard of hearing, and to everyone in between. Contrary to stubborn stereotypes, deaf people are not silent. Many speak, and all laugh, cry, and rejoice aloud.
