In 1999 Luismín, a company from San Luis Potosí with some Canadian capital, offered to take over exploitation in exchange for a large share of the profits. But the Cooperative general assembly voted against the deal. The concession was finally sold to Luismín in 2003. Places During my fieldwork I focused on three sites within the cooperative: the central processing plant (Hacienda de Bustos); the Valenciana mine; and the community of Santa Rosa de Lima, approximately 10 kilometers outside the city of Guanajuato, where many Cooperative members live and where I lived from 1996 to 1998.

Article 27 posits national patrimony as the basis of all private property in Mexico; in doing so it established a mandate for the postrevolutionary state, acting in the name of the nation, to intervene in all property relations. ”This privileging of public domain over private interests created the conditions by which languages of patrimony were reinvigorated as ways to mobilize labor and lay claim to resources. As I describe in chapter 8, this feature of Mexican property law, which pertains not only to subsoil resources but also to collectively held land under the ejido agrarian reform program and, in a somewhat different way, to cultural properties, came to play a central role in the politics of the postrevolutionary state.

From the perspective of both earlier and more recent work on forms of value, especially inalienable value, I wish to propose some new directions in our introduction  analysis of the articulation of value and collectivity and the ways they are conceptualized in diverse contexts. My research into the ways that patrimony is used as a language for classifying resources as inalienable in the Santa Fe Cooperative and in Mexico more generally provides us with a rich opportunity for examining these questions in the context of commodity production and in light of heated debates over state formation and economic activity.
