Reverse rhyme: with—will /w ð/—/w l/ Reverse rhyme describes syllables sharing the vowel and initial consonant (rather than the vowel and the final consonant as is the case in rhyme). zv3 2 ● pararhyme: live—love /l v/—/l v/ Where two syllables have the same initial and final consonants, but different vowels, they pararhyme. ● repetition Although there are no examples in the lines from ‘The Passionate Shepherd’, it is of course possible to have a complete match of CVC, for example the sea, the sea.

Again and rain also have the same two final sounds: /e n/. A rhyme occurs when the two final sounds in a syllable are identical. While phonemes are the smallest units of sound that we hear as meaningful in a language, syllables are the smallest unit of a sequence of sound which can act as a unit of rhythm (that is, they can be stressed or unstressed in a word or phrase; there will be more on this later). As rhyme and other forms of sound patterning depend on relationships between syllables we will spend some time here on the structure of a syllable.

The lines are iambic, with lines of nine and eight syllables, alternately. The ninesyllable lines end in unstressed syllables, forming double rhymes as discussed earlier: 32 When lovely woman stoops to folly, And finds too late that men betray, What charm can soothe her melancholy, What art can wash her guilt away? zv4 0 The only art her guilt to cover, To hide her shame from every eye, To give repentance to her lover, Sound and metre in poetry 33 And wring his bosom—is to die. Blank verse Blank verse consists of lines in iambic pentameter which do not rhyme.
