With the benefit of hindsight, was the problem selected at the beginning of the work the one which the client did want help with? The client’s part in achieving the goal should be emphasized, to continue the process of empowerment. Finally, the client’s views of the task-centred way of working are canvassed. This is also a chance to rehearse the sequences of task-centred work with clients, so that they can use them independently. After all, problem solving is an everyday activity and task-centred practice is just one particularly systematic approach.
Some of these group characteristics make it clear that groups can exert considerable pressure and influence on their membership—for better or for worse. If abused, this potency can be a source of pain and ethical concern: if used responsibly and with skill, it can be a source of real empowerment and positive change in people’s lives. Thus while there are few who attack the whole idea and concept of groupwork, there are many who have strong views on the types of groupwork which are and are not acceptable.
