At the time Sheneka was a doctoral student at Vanderbilt. More often than not her participants wanted to talk about how she, as an African American, had “made it” to Vanderbilt. She became a symbol—whether she wanted that status or not—of positive change to her participants, and she was a source of information and hope for them. As Dr. Williams’s story illustrates, even when we are not looking to “make change” or “take action” as qualitative researchers, we do so. Greenwood and Levin (2005) noted both the challenges and opportunities that social science researchers encounter when they decide to value a researcher role that acknowledges the central importance of action.

In 1925 Husserl introduces phenomenology in the psychology discipline, asserting that it is important to understand individuals’ subjective experiences of particular life experiences (Jennings, 1986). Scholars such as Piaget, Freud, Horney, Maslow, and Rogers give increased attention to qualitative methods in the form of detailed observations, use of diaries, and case study interviews as these become prevalent in European psychology (Morrow, 2007). Researchers also see the expansion of hermeneutics to include dialectical hermeneutics by scholars such as Gadamer (1900–2002), Habermas (1929–), and Ricouer (1913–2005).

The Chicago School continued its study of the “slice of life,” with works such as Boys in White (Becker, Geer, Hughes, & Strauss, 1961), Middletown (Lynd & Lynd, 1929), and Middletown in Transition: A Study in Cultural Conflicts (Lynd & Lynd, 1937). Vidich and Lyman (2001) described this phase in terms of two time periods: ethnography of the “civic other” or community studies/ethnography of the early American immigrants (early 20th century to the 1960s) and studies of ethnicity and assimilation (1950s–1980s).
