Despite having preschool literacy experiences, children from the two working class communities had difficulties with school literacy because their home literacies were not as congruent with the school literacy as was the case for the ‘mainstream’ community. The importance of this study goes far beyond what it tells us about literacy in the 1970s in two particular communities (which may no longer exist). It shows that children anywhere can learn about literacy before school, and out of school, but their literacy learning need not be the same.
