Nationalism versus Regionalism Rather than utilise the term nationalism as I have done above, political and unification aspirations of minoritised communities are often subsumed under the term ‘regionalism’. Whilst not wanting to open a protracted debate into the subject, I would point out that the application of such terminology largely depends on whose perspective one is employing. , 2002: 77). Colin Williams (1997: 112 – 138) identifies three main issues that sustain most forms of regionalism: .

Such an approximation of uses may be considered confrontational, particularly by the language that is ‘losing out’. The ensuing competition for functional domains may result in what has been termed a type of Introduction 17 linguistic conflict, as speakers forego any diglossic norms that they may have conformed to and, in many cases, use one of the languages in question in many or all contexts. This is particularly significant when the ‘losing’ language is spoken by a minoritised group who wield little political power within the society in question.

Barth writes: [. ] categorical ethnic distinctions do not depend on an absence of mobility, contact and information, but do entail social processes of exclusion and incorporation whereby discrete categories are mantained despite changing participation and membership in the course of individual life histories. (1969: 9)14 Thus, the interface and negotiation of boundaries delineates members of ethnic groups from non-members by acting as a contrast or opposition by which each can be identified. In this way, the groups themselves are the outcome of processes of inclusion and exclusion (Donnan & Wilson, 2001: 21 –23).
