Strange enough, almost 30 years later, the findings were completely denied. Mesozoic and Cainozoic sediments on the Middle Atlantic Islands' (After Mitchell-Thome 1974). The Mesozoic stratigraphy of Maio/Cape Verde Islands and Fuerteventura/Canary Islands was adjusted according to new data from Robertson and Bernoulli (1982).
G. on the Las Palmas terrace sediments of Gran Canaria have shown that the older data must be treated with caution; some of them are based only on lithological comparison or unsuitable fossils. This holds true even for the Miocene dating of the Las Palmas terrace using Clypeaster altus Lk. by Rothpletz and Simonelli (1890), who also mentioned this sea urchin from Pliocene strata (for discussion see Rothe 1966). The more detailed study of Lietz and Schmincke (1975) on these sediments, now termed the "Las Palmas Formation", and a comparable "Arguineguin Formation" in southern Gran Canaria (Schmincke 1976) used K/Ar-dating of intercalated lava streams.
The faunas contain abundant mollusc shells, echinoderms, red algae, sometimes bryozoa and corals, but also foraminifera (mainly benthic) which are all of low stratigraphic importance. The stratigraphic connotation was essentially based on a comparison with the system of different height levels established for the African coast and the Mediterranean. The uppermost level was regarded as Sicilian (or Milazzian) by Klug, who did not agree to a Miocene age of such a level as suggested earlier by Hausen (1958) for Fuerteventura.
