You might review some of your notes and previous writing. It may be an hour before you get anything down on the page. You’d write for maybe an hour, with spurts of productivity, then break for water or a snack for 15–20 minutes. Then you’d write for maybe an hour, starting to get your pace established. Then you’d break for lunch, which might add up to 45 minutes. If you’re good at keeping yourself on task, you’d get another hour of writing in, but then your focus would probably wane, and you’d find yourself puttering around once again.

The exception: If you have a hard deadline approaching, adrenaline can do wonders for your focus. If your manuscript is due to the publisher in one week, and you still have 30,000 words to write, you sure as heck can get a lot of writing done in one week—if you shut yourself off from the world. It all ultimately comes down to your focus. But don’t lie to yourself. It’s incredibly difficult to focus on writing for more than three hours in a day. Instead of waiting to write two to three hours once a week, I’d recommend you use the Pomodoro technique to write one or two 25-minute sessions regularly throughout the week.

Writing out your why in one to three sentences is key. Don’t skip this step. Don’t talk yourself into believing that “thinking” about your why is the same as writing it. One to three complete sentences, written out, posted somewhere visible. Coach’s orders! What are my why sentences?
