When I was first getting started—seriously writing every day and sending my stories out to every market I could find—I was only a few months out of college. I would finish a short story; send it out with an SASE to a mystery, science fiction (SF), horror, or adventure magazine; and start on another one. After some time, I probably had 15 or 20 stories circulating among all the possible markets.
