It has nothing to do with “fairies” in the usual sense of that term—that is, tiny creatures with butterfly wings, like Disney’s Tinkerbell. Those are a corruption of the original idea of Faery: J. R. R. ” Tolkien gives credit to Andrew Lang for protesting against this infantilization and miniaturization, but he chastises Lang for classifying almost any story that is not completely realistic as a fairy story—including even Gulliver’s voyage to Lilliput! He further blames Lang for helping to redescribe the fairy-tale world as a world for children; to Tolkien this it most emphatically is not, except insofar as children are simply people.

English preparatory schools, public schools, and universities then all ran—and for the most part still run—on a three-term academic calendar: from October to mid-December, from late January to early April, and from early May to early July. As a result, after starting school Warnie was together with his brother—who remained at Little Lea, receiving visits from tutors—for about five months of the year.
