It's "in the eye of the beholder," to a certain degree, changing with time, place, and all manner of other factors. Alternatively, the remaining parent remarries, and the stepparent becomes the primary antagonist of the hero, trying to gain privileges for his or her own offspring. While the older fairy tales evolved from the sole intent of sharing with an adult audience, children started to become accustomed to the folklore.
