I am hearing & I support Deaf individuals with their own culture, language, art, & respect their identity. This is a complex question and depends on the language. Babies CAN communicate physically 6-8 months prior to communicate verbally. It’s OK to use It is me, That’s him, It’s her, and similar constructions, instead of using the grammatically correct but more stuffy It is I, That’s he, and It’s she. Other linguists caution against assuming that the correct adult pronunciation always underlies a child's mispronunciation (Waterson 1981).
